Today both a tranquility and eagerness accompanied me as I waited in line to cast my vote. This odd mixture of emotions is usually reserved for moments of finality. Like when “the buck stops here” or before the nurse says, “The doctor will see you now.”
Photography, German, and Memories
Last week during a photo shoot at a Catholic church, I had an older gentleman come in for his portraits. He was an odd mixture of cheer and sobriety. It was as though joy came natural to him, but an overriding reservedness held it at bay.
Solve the Right Problem

“Some Scholars”
After five years of proofing and editing textbooks and academic materials, I’ve yet to come across an author use the phrase “some scholars” in a positive sense.
Be in the World, Don’t Try to Change It
Being a mixture of philosopher, philologist, flâneur, and bullshit-caller, Nassim Nicholas Taleb is one of my favorite public intellectuals. Recently, he said something that got me thinking about one of my favorite insights about this world and its trade-offs.
